Macklemore says Ed Sheeran did not simply decide that their tour partnership was no longer working.
According to the Seattle rapper, Sheeran and his team were placed in an extraordinary position: remove Macklemore from the remaining U.S. dates of the Loop Tour or risk losing multiple stadiums altogether.
Macklemore announced that he had been dropped from Sheeran’s tour following his outspoken support for Palestinians during performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The rapper said he and Sheeran subsequently had several difficult conversations before the final decision was made.
“Ed Sheeran and his team have made the decision to remove me from The Loop tour,” Macklemore wrote.
Tour promoter Messina Touring Group has confirmed the central practical issue behind that decision, saying venues scheduled to host upcoming shows informed organizers that they would not allow concerts to take place with Macklemore remaining on the lineup.
Macklemore Says Robert Kraft Helped Create the Ultimatum
Macklemore places New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft at the center of what happened next.
According to Macklemore, Sheeran told him that Kraft had contacted him after the MetLife Stadium performances and made clear that Macklemore would not be permitted to perform at Gillette Stadium.
Macklemore then made a larger allegation.
He said Sheeran told him Kraft had contacted other stadium owners and that they collectively delivered an ultimatum: if Macklemore remained on the tour, Sheeran would not be allowed to perform in their venues.
That specific account of Kraft rallying other owners comes from Macklemore and has not been independently confirmed in full.
What has been confirmed, however, is that multiple venues did object.
The Controversy Began With ‘Free Palestine’
The dispute escalated after Macklemore’s MetLife Stadium appearance.
During the show, he addressed the war in Gaza, spoke about Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank and told the crowd: “Free Palestine.”
He has repeatedly made Palestinian advocacy part of his music and live performances.
In 2024, Macklemore released “Hind’s Hall,” named after the Columbia University building occupied by pro-Palestinian student demonstrators and dedicated to Hind Rajab, the Palestinian child killed in Gaza.
Macklemore said the opportunity to deliver his message inside enormous stadiums was one of the reasons he had agreed to join Sheeran’s tour.
Robert Kraft Says Macklemore Crossed a Line
Kraft has defended the decision to prevent Macklemore from appearing at Gillette Stadium, but he describes the controversy differently.
The billionaire Patriots owner said his objection was not simply to Macklemore expressing concern for Palestinians.
Kraft, who has devoted significant resources to combating antisemitism, said he believed Macklemore’s rhetoric had crossed a line and that allowing him to perform would conflict with Gillette Stadium’s responsibility to maintain a welcoming environment.
Macklemore strongly rejects the accusation that his criticism of Israel or support for Palestinians is antisemitic.
He argues that criticism of the Israeli government should not automatically be equated with hostility toward Jewish people.
Ed Sheeran Finds Himself in an Uncomfortable Position
Perhaps the most complicated figure in the story is Sheeran.
Macklemore says the two have been friends for roughly 13 years and described their conversations over the situation as painful.
He also acknowledged that Sheeran had been put in an extremely difficult position once major venues began threatening to cancel dates.
According to Macklemore, however, their disagreement ultimately went deeper than tour logistics.
Sheeran has so far issued no public statement addressing Macklemore’s version of those conversations.
A Tour Dispute Becomes a Much Bigger Music Industry Question
Macklemore had been scheduled to appear at multiple remaining U.S. stadium dates before being removed.
That makes this more than a dispute between two musicians.
It raises a much larger question about who ultimately controls what artists can say when stadium tours involve performers, promoters, venue owners, corporate interests and hundreds of thousands of ticket holders.
Macklemore made his choice clear.
The stadiums made theirs.
And when Sheeran’s tour was forced to choose between keeping Macklemore and potentially losing venues, Macklemore was the one who disappeared from the bill.
