Macklemore’s run with Ed Sheeran is officially over — and the promoter behind the U.S. leg of the tour says the decision came after multiple stadiums effectively refused to host concerts with the rapper still on the bill.
Messina Touring Group, which promotes Sheeran’s U.S. Loop Tour, confirmed that Macklemore will no longer perform on the remaining dates after venues objected to his continued participation following his outspoken support for Palestinians during the tour’s opening shows at MetLife Stadium.
The promoter said it had been notified by upcoming venues that they “will not allow a concert to take place with Macklemore on the lineup.”
According to Messina, leaving him on the bill could therefore have resulted in the cancellation of multiple stadium concerts and affected hundreds of thousands of ticket holders.
Macklemore’s ‘Free Palestine’ Remarks Triggered the Backlash
The controversy began during Sheeran’s September 4 concert at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Macklemore told the crowd that one of his reasons for joining the massive stadium tour was the opportunity to stand in front of large audiences and say “Free Palestine.”
During his set, Macklemore performed “Hind’s Hall,” his 2024 protest song inspired by pro-Palestinian campus demonstrations, while imagery showing destruction in Gaza appeared on screens.
He returned to the issue the following night, again expressing support for Palestinians while attempting to distinguish criticism of Israel from hostility toward Jewish people.
The performances quickly drew criticism from several advocacy organizations and public figures.
Promoter Says Keeping Macklemore Could Have Cost Entire Shows
The statement from Messina Touring Group changes the scale of the story.
This was no longer simply a matter of whether Sheeran personally agreed with Macklemore’s politics.
According to the promoter, the tour was facing the prospect of losing actual stadium dates.
Macklemore had been scheduled to support Sheeran at multiple remaining U.S. shows.
The Loop Tour is playing some of the largest venues in America, making even one cancellation a major logistical and financial problem.
Multiple cancellations would have affected hundreds of thousands of fans, along with touring crews, local workers, vendors and the enormous infrastructure required to move a stadium production across the country.
Faced with that possibility, the promoter chose to continue without Macklemore.
Macklemore Says Robert Kraft Helped Rally Stadium Owners
Macklemore has offered his own account of how the venue opposition developed.
He says New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, whose organization controls Gillette Stadium, objected to his appearance there and subsequently helped encourage other stadium owners to take similar positions.
Macklemore said Sheeran informed him that the tour was effectively being given a choice between removing him and losing venues.
Kraft has publicly defended blocking Macklemore from Gillette Stadium, saying he believed the rapper’s rhetoric crossed a line into antisemitism.
Macklemore strongly disputes that characterization and maintains that criticism of the Israeli government and advocacy for Palestinians should not be equated with hatred of Jewish people.
The claim that Kraft personally coordinated the broader group of stadium owners comes from Macklemore. What is independently established through the promoter’s statement is that multiple venues did refuse to proceed with Macklemore on the lineup.
Ed Sheeran Has Stayed Publicly Silent
Caught between the two sides is Ed Sheeran.
Sheeran and Macklemore have known each other for more than a decade.
Macklemore says the two had difficult conversations before he was removed and that they disagreed over how the controversy should be handled.
Sheeran, however, has not publicly addressed the dispute himself.
A Bigger Fight Over Who Controls the Stage
What began with two words — “Free Palestine” — has now turned into a much larger music-industry controversy.
An artist used a stadium stage to make a political statement.
Some audience members and organizations objected.
Venue operators decided they were unwilling to host him.
And the promoter ultimately decided that preserving the tour outweighed preserving Macklemore’s place on the lineup.
That leaves an uncomfortable question hanging over the rest of the Loop Tour.
Artists may control what they say into a microphone.
But when a tour depends on privately controlled stadiums, promoters, contracts and hundreds of thousands of ticket holders, they may not control whether there is still a stage waiting for them afterward.
