Robert Kraft is standing by the decision that helped turn Macklemore’s political message into one of the biggest controversies surrounding Ed Sheeran’s current U.S. tour.
The New England Patriots owner confirmed that Macklemore would not be permitted to perform at Gillette Stadium when Sheeran’s Loop Tour arrives in Massachusetts.
The decision followed Macklemore’s performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where the rapper said “Free Palestine,” displayed images from Gaza and performed his protest song “Hind’s Hall.”
What began as a dispute over one support act and one stadium soon became considerably larger.
Tour promoter Messina Touring Group confirmed that several venues told organizers they would not host Sheeran’s concerts if Macklemore remained on the lineup. Faced with the possibility of multiple cancellations affecting hundreds of thousands of ticket holders, the promoter removed him from the remaining support dates.
Robert Kraft Says the Decision Was About Hate Speech
Kraft rejected the suggestion that the decision amounted to opposition to advocating for Palestinian civilians.
In a lengthy statement, he said Gillette Stadium was committed to maintaining an environment that did not provide a platform for hate speech. He pointed to Macklemore’s recent stage material as well as what Kraft described as a broader history of rhetoric and imagery offensive to Jewish people.
He argued that support for Palestinians should not, in his view, come at the expense of Jewish communities or ignore the role of Hamas in the conflict.
Kraft also said he agreed with Macklemore on one fundamental point: too many people had suffered and died.
Where they sharply differ is over how the conflict should be discussed publicly.
Kraft believes Macklemore’s presentation crossed a line into divisiveness. Macklemore believes criticism of Israel and advocacy for Palestinian rights are being wrongly equated with antisemitism.
Macklemore Says Kraft’s Intervention Went Much Further
Macklemore offered a very different account of how events unfolded.
In a social media statement, he said Sheeran told him that Kraft had personally called and made clear that Macklemore would not be allowed to appear at Gillette Stadium.
The rapper went further, alleging that Kraft helped rally other stadium operators, creating an ultimatum for Sheeran’s tour: remove Macklemore or risk losing venues.
Kraft’s response did not dispute Macklemore’s account that he had been barred from Gillette, though Kraft framed the decision around antisemitism and venue standards rather than Macklemore’s support for Palestine.
Messina Touring Group subsequently confirmed the most important practical part of Macklemore’s story: multiple venues had refused to proceed with concerts if he remained on the bill.
Macklemore Insists His Message Was Not Against Jewish People
Macklemore has repeatedly rejected accusations that his Palestinian advocacy is directed against Jewish people.
During the MetLife performance, he explicitly told Jewish listeners that his criticism of Israel was not criticism of them and described his message as one centered on peace, dignity and equality.
His performance nevertheless drew condemnation from Jewish advocacy organizations.
That history has now resurfaced as part of the argument over whether his current activism crosses a line.
Ed Sheeran Is Caught in the Middle
Sheeran has remained publicly quiet about the latest dispute.
Macklemore, however, made clear that the two have discussed it privately and described their disagreement as painful.
The pair have known each other for years, and Macklemore said he does not believe one political dispute will erase their friendship. But he also made clear he was unwilling to soften his position simply to remain on the tour.
That leaves Sheeran in an unusually difficult position.
Keeping Macklemore could have meant losing major stadium dates. Removing him means becoming part of a heated debate over political expression, Palestine and who gets to decide what can be said from some of America’s biggest stages.
For Macklemore, the loss is obvious: one of the largest touring platforms in music.
For Kraft, the issue is equally clear from the opposite direction: he believes venue owners have a responsibility to intervene when they believe speech has crossed into hate.
And that is why this story is unlikely to end with Macklemore simply disappearing from an opening-act slot.
It has become a much bigger argument over where political advocacy ends, where hate speech begins, and who gets to draw that line when music, money and stadium power collide.
